Project Profile: Safe Handling
Ford Reiche and Paul Turina grew Safe Handling from a small rail siding to a major bulk transload and toll processing facility with three locations in Maine and Pennsylvania. When they needed assistance to help them prepare for the next level of growth, they sought out the experience of St.Germain Collins.
Contract Regulatory Compliance and Business Assistance
St.Germain Collins provided onsite assistance with environmental, safety and ISO 14001 compliance on a contract basis, which allowed Safe Handling access to a team with greater depth than a single employee, with direct cost control to meet their needs. St.Germain Collins maintained critical programs and strengthened other areas to increase protection for workers and the environment.
RCRA Enforcement Response
Prior to St.Germain Collins involvement with Safe Handling, the Maine DEP conducted a RCRA hazardous waste enforcement inspection of their site. Struggling with their response, Safe Handling sought out the experience of our senior managers. St.Germain Collins assessed the site’s compliance status, quickly instituted corrective actions, and negotiated resolution of issues with Maine DEP, avoiding any fines assessed to our client.
Emergency Spill Response & Reporting
24 hours a day, seven days a week, St.Germain Collins provided on-call spill response, assessment and regulatory reporting for Safe Handling operations, which routinely transloaded thousands of gallons of hazardous materials daily.
Environmental Site Assessments
As Ford Reiche considered future options for Safe Handling, he asked St.Germain Collins to evaluate company properties and operations. St.Germain Collins prepared Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments for the Safe Handling properties, customized to our client’s needs and expedited to meet their schedule.
Remediation
Phase II ESAs resulted in characterization of multiple areas of petroleum and hazardous material impacts to soil on site. St.Germain Collins directed and oversaw soil removal, confirmation sampling, reporting and successful resolution of each remediation project.
Strategic Asset Positioning
As a result of St.Germain Collins partnership with Safe Handling, we were able to identify and resolve environmental and compliance problems and assist Safe Handling in positioning the company strategically for sale. St.Germain Collins expertise facilitated the due diligence process, and Ford Reiche realized his dream to sell the company to Savage, a firm with a national reputation in safe transloading of bulk chemicals.
